Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson spoke with The Tennessee Star about the work that led to Tennessee’s victory before the U.S. Supreme Court in United States v. Skrmetti.
Johnson sponsored Senate Bill 1 in 2023, which prohibits certain medical treatments for minors when those treatments are provided for the purpose of gender transition. The legislation was challenged in federal court before the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Tennessee’s law on June 18, 2025.
In the interview, Johnson discussed the development of the legislation, the legal challenges that followed and the work by Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti and his office in defending the law before the nation’s highest court.
